Episode #128: The new year is the perfect time to start overcoming your fears! I speak with Julien Smith, author of the free ebook about overcoming fear, The Flinch. Then I speak with Vivek Singh and Elaine Wigdor Robin about their experiences attending India’s first stuttering conference.

Despite what The King’s Speech may have inadvertently implied, stuttering is not caused by weak character or bad parenting. It’s biological and genetic in origin. Despite that, stuttering is still the butt of jokes and stutterers still receive negative feedback from others. In some countries like India, stuttering is taboo. Women stutters have trouble finding husbands. Organizing a national conference about stuttering is certainly an act of courage. Well done, ISA!

As Vivek described it on this episode perfectly well, attending a stuttering conference made him feel like Stutter Bond with a license to stutter. If you stutter, you’re not alone.

My friend, fellow stutterer and previous Stuttering is Cool guest, Philip Garber, was actually told by his teacher not to ask questions in class. Instead, she asked him to write his questions down and ignored him every time he raised his hand. While her intentions may have been well meaning, it’s another example that we still need to educate the public about our misunderstood and “invisible” disability.

Read all about it in this New York Times article.

It strikes me as odd that a teacher would try to discourage a stuttering student from speaking in class. Most stutterers I know, myself included, would clam up. Not Phil. Way to go, brotha!

Since the story is in the public domain, I illustrated a cover for it, assembled it into an ebook and I’m making it available for download for free!

It’s available in epub format which can be read on many devices such as the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and the Sony Reader. You can also read ebooks on your desktop and laptop using free software such as Calibre and Stanza.
You’re probably wondering about the cover I created. This ebook is one of three releases I’m making available to the world. I choose classic novels in the public domain such as Moby Dick and illustrate covers for them. My schtick is I design the covers using references of today’s digital culture. I explain it all in a blog post named, Classic books, new covers, on my personal website. You will also find a list of the other books there.

Please note that this book has nothing at all to do with stuttering, however, in the spirit of fun, I am releasing this ebook’s to coincide with this year’s International Stuttering Awareness Day.

Download in epub format to read on almost anything
Download in mobi format to read on the Kindle

Link #66

The King’s Speech is a book as well! Of course, I read it and of course, I loved it. It’s written by Lionel Logue’s grandson, Mark, who – picture it – your parents always had these pictures of King George VI around and one day your aunt tells you about a box of your grandfather’s things she just found in her home. You open up the box and inside are all his notes, journals and mementos of his treating and friendship with the King. All these were used to rewrite the screenplay which became the movie we love today.

The book is not “the book version” of the movie. It’s a historical count of the friendship. How life was like for the two men growing up, how Logue came to move to England, how the two met, and so on. A fascinating “background story” to the movie which, as of writing, I’ve already seen twice. Can’t wait to see it again and I am in trouble once it’s out on DVD!

The BBC posted a short video of Mark Logue showing some of his grandfather’s mementos (hat tip to Steven of the BSA for alerting of the video).

It’s a great chance to give future speech therapists the inside story on what if feels like to stutter and all the goodness and crappity crap that comes with it. I connected with Greg’s class over Skype and here it is in all it’s mp3 glory.

On today’s show, I share a recent epiphany-like event at a Korean grill restaurant. Yes, epiphanies can occur anywhere ;) Namely, stuttering with confidence. Stuttering without recoiling from social punishment despite the weird looks we get. Then the following night, I had a mind-blowing conversation about this with fellow stutterers on Twitter. Together, we shared how rewarding it is to stutter with confidence. I share some of the tweets from that conversation below:

…I guess you could say I use my stuttering to my advantage; a social filter. I’ve got no time for snobbish standards.

My advice: I don’t MAKE the time 4 standards. Don’t like my stuttering? Plenty of other people on the planet to make friends. Kthanxbai.

Also, it’s the confidence that attracts people. That and shared interests, connections.

Stutter & react like a wimp, then you’ll be seen as one. Stutter & react with confidence, people see you in a positive light.

You’ll get there. For me, it was getting positive feedback and rising above the negative. It ain’t easy. You’ll get knocked down

THAT’S IT! Having control. Not of your speech but of your rejection of societal norms.

THAT’S the root of getting confidence. Being in control & rejecting societal expectations.

On today's show, I share a recent epiphany-like event at a Korean grill restaurant. I share some of the tweets from that conversation below:

...I guess you could say I use my stuttering to my advantage; a social filter. I've got no time for snobbish standards.
My advice: I don't MAKE the time 4 standards. Don't like my stuttering? Plenty of other people on the planet to make friends. Kthanxbai.
Also, it's the confidence that attracts people. That and shared interests, connections.
Stutter & react like a wimp, then you'll be seen as one. Stutter & react with confidence, people see you in a positive light.
You'll get there. For me, it was getting positive feedback and rising above the negative. It ain't easy. You'll get knocked down
THAT'S IT! Having control. Not of your speech but of your rejection of societal norms.

THAT'S the root of getting confidence. Being in control & rejecting societal expectations.
Exactly. You know your self-worth. Exude it. Man, they should teach this in speech therapy.

@stirpicus To quote Demetri Martin: "Stuttering's not a disability, it just adds drama and suspense to any conversation!" ;)

I also talk about a new website I started up called Ti-Ger.org. I hope you can join in on the fun :)</itunes:summary>

I was interviewed on the fantastic Just One More Book! podcast produced by Mark Blevis and Andrea Ross. They had a call for art submissions for their Love of Reading Gallery and mine was entitled Now This One. I talk about how I came up with the idea, how I drew it and my thoughts on digital art and what stops me from using my iPhone as a sketchbook. You can listen to the interview here.

This is stuttering link #32 because I hardly stutter my shows. Reason being that stutterers usually stutter a lot less when speaking by themselves. So this is a great opportunity to hear how I usually stutter on my high-stuttering days. Yet I still get my message across. Stuttering doesn’t prevent you from communicating effectively ;)

Here’s what I came up with for my Anti-Quack character who, as you’ve most likely guessed, is the scientist who actually does research and keeps up to date on stuttering knowledge, etc. Inspired by (and slight caricature) you-know-who and his podcast ;)

I still need to refine him. Perhaps thicker pencil strokes will do the trick.

A previous version of anti-quack:

Here’s a sneak preview of an upcoming character I’ll be introducing (once I get off my arse, that is!) in a very near future comic. This stutterer will be totally cool with his stuttering and will play a role in bringing Franky Banky to accepting his stutter as well. At the moment, his name is Chess until I can find a better name (if any). The final Chess is at the bottom.

Greg Snyder, co-founder of StutterTalk has a twitter account where among other things, he shares fantastic links about stuttering. Yesterday, my eye caught on this gem, Your Choices Determine Your Happiness, by Keith Harrel.

Keith is a professional speaker and a person who stutters. Thanks to a fantastic teacher and terriffic mother, Keith learned at a very early age the importance of having a positive attitude about his stuttering.

"My mother taught me then and there that attitude is a choice. When I told her I couldn’t go back to school, she listened and understood what was contributing to that negative attitude. She was able to listen to the pain that fueled my fears and humiliation. She then gave me the opportunity to choose a new attitude.

You have choice. You can accept an attitude of humiliation and fear or you can take on an attitude of action. You can be a victim or a victor. You can let life run you over or you can take it on"

I highly recommend this read and I also recommend you sign up on Twitter if you haven’t already done so and follow Greg.
It’s hard living with a stutter. Even harder that stuttering isn’t understood. Today’s episode focuses on 2 of the many downsides of stuttering. First, I give a little bit of a rant about the perception that people who don’t stutter seem to have about people who do stutter. Despite what we tell them. In the second half, I talk about something that’s been going on stutterwise with me lately. I’m just too tired to talk. What is causing this and most importantly of all, how can I prevent it?

It's hard living with a stutter. Even harder that stuttering isn't understood. Today's episode focuses on 2 of the many downsides of stuttering. First, I give a little bit of a rant about the perception that people who don't stutter seem to have about people who do stutter. Despite what we tell them. In the second half, I talk about something that's been going on stutterwise with me lately. I'm just too tired to talk. What is causing this and most importantly of all, how can I prevent it?</itunes:summary>

Here’s a video of a CBS news clip about stuttering from the CBS website. It talks about the struggles and pain of stuttering through clips of people sharing their experiences at the National Stuttering Association’s annual conference. I can relate to each and every single one of them and wish I was able to attend. there is something fantastic that always happens whenever I hear other stutterers talk about the same experiences I went through (hence, my podcast!). Note the various professions these stutterers have despite their speech.

Sorry, there’s a 15-30 second ad at the beginning and the sound is only one the left channel for some reason.
